Many health insurance companies in the U.S. are divided by the regions they cover. Depending on the coverage area, weather it is a small region, where Medicaid and Medicare offer their plans, or the whole country, there are six of the largest health insurance companies, including WellPoint, CIGNA, Aetna, Humana, United Healthcare. These companies insure over 100 million people, which is approximately half of the insured population. Let us tell you more about the top 5 largest health insurance companies.

WellPoint, Inc.

WellPoint is the largest health insurance company in terms of membership with their 34 million members in its affiliated health plans and more than 70 million insurees in its subsidiaries included.

The company was created in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 2004, by merging WellPoint Health Network Inc. and  Anthem, Inc.

One in nine Americans is insured through this company, which covers California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Idiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Preferred provider organizations (PPOs); health maintenance organizations, (HMOs); point-of-service (POS) plans; traditional indemnity plans and other hybrid plans, including consumer-driven health plans (CDHPs); and hospital only and limited benefit products are the care plans managed by WellPoint. Claims processing, underwriting, stop loss insurance, actuarial services, provider network access, medical cost management, disease management, wellness programs and other administrative services, are all the things company offers to self-funded customers.

CIGNA Health Insurance Company

This company exists for the last 125 years. It was founded in Philadelphia, Pa.With earnings (as of December 2011) of $21.3 billion, the company is ranked Number 129 on the Fortune 500 list. It has 11.4 million insurees in the U.S. and 7.6 million in 29 different countries outside the U.S.

CIGNA is divided into three divisions:
CIGNA HealthCare offers health plans for both companies and the individuals.
CIGNA Group Insurance offers health plans for disability group.
CIGNA International offers health plans for employees of multinational companies based abroad.

Aetna

In 1853, in Hartford, Conn, one of the largest health insurance companies named Aetha was founded. It has almost 18 million medical members, 13.5 million dental members, and 8.5 million pharmacy members. The company offers heath plans that include healthcare, dental, pharmacy, group life, disability insurance, and employee benefits, especially for small, mid-sized and large multi-site national employers.

Humana

Humana was founded in Louisville, Ky, in 1961. It has 10.2 million medical members and ranks Number 73 on Fortune magazine’s list of the largest U.S. companies, ranked by annual income.

The company is divided into three divisions:
UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual provides benefit plans and service solutions on a dedicated basis to large, multi-site and national employers and coordinates network-based health care benefits and services on behalf of small to mid-sized employers, as well as individuals, students, and families.
United Healthcare Medicare & Retirement is offering plans which meet the needs of seniors.
United Healthcare Community & State offers plans for state-sponsored public and Medicaid programs and their beneficiaries.

On the Fortune 500 list based on income, United HealthCare is ranked Number 22.
